BNP Paribas Securities Services Builds Web Strategy On SilverStream Software; Leading European Securities Services Provider Looks Ahead to Promise of Web Services

Business/Technology Editors

BILLERICA, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 2, 2001

SilverStream Software, Inc. (Nasdaq: SSSW) announced today that BNP Paribas Securities Services, the leading provider of securities services in Europe, has successfully built a comprehensive Internet strategy around the SilverStream eXtend(TM) Application Server, furthering BNP Paribas Securities Services' position in the highly competitive European market.

BNP Paribas Securities Software, a wholly owned subsidiary of the BNP Paribas group with assets under custody in excess of 1.9 trillion euros (USD $1.7 trillion), has built more than a dozen Internet and Intranet applications on the SilverStream eXtend Application Server since 1998, when BNP Paribas Securities Services decided to migrate its client-server applications to an Internet architecture.

At the heart of BNP Paribas Securities Services' technical advances is @PBLink(R), a specialist-client communication tool that handles the reporting operations and capturing instructions for nearly 200 institutional clients spread across the globe. Built on a now outdated DOS application, BNP Paribas Securities Services migrated to an HTML interface using the SilverStream eXtend Application Server, a move enabled by the simplicity and stability of the SilverStream technology.

"With SilverStream, we had an integrated development environment covering 90% of the functions we needed, and most importantly, the promise of conformity to standards," said Laurent Bede, Technical Manager who oversaw the Intranet and Internet @PBLink project. "We carried out a number of qualitative and performance tests on SilverStream to ensure that we had made the right choice - which was confirmed by our later achievements."

@PBLink differentiates itself from competitor's applications through comprehensive functionality and the scope of its infrastructure, which reaches 300 clients, each with at least 10-15 users and up to 300 in some cases. The application's automated deployment allows BNP Paribas Securities Services' customers additional ease-of-use by reducing the need for in-house management.

In building @PBLink, BNP Paribas Securities Services development team also created a comprehensive charter for visual and graphic characteristics, a charter that has become the model for every BNP Paribas Securities Services' Internet and Intranet application built since. These include Intranet applications for managing securities collateral, accounting forecasts for specialized securities, all client-related contact details, stock option plans on both the Internet and Intranet, and the allotment of funds, shares, options and warrants.

Having built a solid foundation, BNP Paribas Securities Services has turned its eyes toward the future and the development of the Web Services market. SilverStream's ongoing commitments to portability and extensibility, evidenced by the company's stringent adherence to J2EE, XML and Web Services standards, has strengthened BNP Paribas Securities Services' faith in SilverStream's vision of the Web Services market and the SilverStream extend suite of products.

"SilverStream eXtend enables customers like BNP Paribas Securities Services to rapidly deliver business-critical applications to the Web and realize the benefits of interoperability using Web Services technologies," said David Litwack, president and CEO of SilverStream Software. "The success that BNP Paribas Securities Services has already experienced using our software is a testament to our ongoing commitment to providing superior technology to simplify and accelerate the creation and delivery of sophisticated business applications."

"Web Services will open the way to a new era of standardization, and act as a catalyst for the fusion of heterogeneous information systems," said Laurent Bede. "Web Services are the meeting point between the worlds of Java and Microsoft, with the broad support of standards such as XML, SOAP & UDDI, they enable us to forecast the way our applications would link with those of our future partners, no matter what their underlying technologies are. As one of the first to take up Web Services, SilverStream continues to demonstrate the pioneering spirit that we support 100%."
